Action Summary of City Council Meetings

The following is a summary of key action items taken by the Mayor and Council at the last City Council meeting. The meeting was held at City Hall at 25 East Alabama Street, Tallapoosa.

City Council “Regular” Meeting – May 15, 2023

  • Minutes, financials, and checks over $300 approved.
  • A motion was approved to accept the Audit and Financial Report fiscal Year ending August 31, 2022, for the City of Tallapoosa as presented by Julie George, Lead Auditor for Rushton Accounting and Business Advisors.
  • A motion was approved to issue a moratorium on the issuance of business licenses for the purpose of establishing a VAP shop for a period of 120 days from the date of this meeting (May 15th). Said moratorium is subject to repeal at any time during the 120 days by the decision of the mayor and council.
  • A motion was approved to purchase a digital message board for $38,454.00 and to adopt guidelines governing the use of the board for community functions.
  • A motion was approved for bids from Eagle Demolition & Environmental, Inc. for asbestos abatement for city buildings located at 9 East Alabama Street ($3,068) and 15 East Alabama Street ($1,750), and 245 Robertson Avenue ($3,919).
  • A motion was approved to waive the first reading of a Sign Ordinance repealing section 78-6 signage permitted on city rights-of-way. A motion was then approved to adopt a Sign Ordinance repealing section 78-6 signage permitted on city rights-of-way and providing for the recently (city) installed multi-use 3×7 full-color digital signboard at the triangle.
  • A motion was approved to accept the warranty deed from the Haralson County Board of Education transferring the ownership of the property commonly known as the “old gym” located at 261 Robertson Avenue to the City of Tallapoosa.
  • Motions were approved for the purchase of a grooming machine for the city’s recreation department for $15,000 and a greens roller for the city’s golf course for $8,500.
  • A motion was approved to authorize the city to purchase the building at 71 W Lipham Street from the Ball Corporation using ARPA funds.
  • A motion was approved to contract with 3:16 Demolition and Grading ($9,500) for the erection of a wall at the Taliaferro addition of the Hollywood Cemetery.
  • A motion was adopted for an Alcohol Ordinance establishing the authority of the Mayor and Council to regulate the sales of alcoholic beverages within the city limits; the first reading was waived.

The next scheduled meeting for Mayor and Council is Monday, June 12th, at 6:00 pm at City Hall at 25 E. Alabama St.
